Projects

Objective overviews of major blockchain projects: what each network is, how it is governed, and the risks worth knowing. These profiles are educational — they are not recommendations, and nothing here is investment advice.

Bitcoin (BTC)

What it is: The first and largest cryptocurrency, launched in 2009 following a whitepaper published in 2008 under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto. Bitcoin runs on a decentralized proof-of-work blockchain designed as peer-to-peer electronic cash, and is most commonly used today as a store of value.

Team & governance: There is no company or CEO. Development is maintained by open-source contributors, and protocol changes require broad consensus among node operators, miners, and users.

Risks: High price volatility; irreversible transactions (lost keys or mistaken transfers cannot be undone); evolving regulation across jurisdictions; concentration of mining in certain regions and pools.

Ethereum (ETH)

What it is: A programmable blockchain launched in 2015 that introduced smart contracts — code that runs on the network without intermediaries. It underpins much of decentralized finance (DeFi) and NFT activity. In 2022, Ethereum completed “the Merge,” switching its consensus mechanism from proof of work to proof of stake.

Team & governance: Originally proposed by Vitalik Buterin and co-founders; development is now coordinated by the Ethereum Foundation alongside independent client teams and a large open-source community.

Risks: Network fees can spike during congestion; smart-contract bugs have caused major losses; competition from other smart-contract platforms; regulatory uncertainty around staking and tokens.

Solana (SOL)

What it is: A high-throughput smart-contract blockchain launched in 2020, designed for fast and low-cost transactions using proof of stake combined with a “proof of history” timestamping mechanism. It is widely used for DeFi, NFTs, and consumer crypto apps.

Team & governance: Developed by Solana Labs, co-founded by Anatoly Yakovenko; the network is operated by independent validators, with the Solana Foundation supporting ecosystem growth.

Risks: The network has experienced several high-profile outages; validator concentration concerns; high volatility; reliance on continued ecosystem growth to sustain activity.
